Your Meter Matters
How to Read Your Meter Your electric meter is a precision instrument which accurately measures the amount of electricity you use.
Once a month, one of our meter readers reads the dials on your meter to determine the number of kiloWatt-hours (kWh) of electricity you have used since your meter was last read. This is determined from the difference between the two readings.
Why Read your Meter Think of your meter as a cash register adding up the electrical energy you use on a BUY NOW PAY LATER BASIS.
Learn to read the meter yourself and take control over your energy $$$$. Regular reading will help you to establish the energy use patterns in your home.
Reading Your Meter On the face of the meter are four or five round dials. Each dial has ten numbers and a pointer like the hand of a clock. The pointers turn only when electricity is being used, and they turn so slowly that you can hardly see them move.
Let's try reading a meter:
- Notice that the numbers on the dials do not rotate in the same direction.
- You should read the dials from Left to Right.
- It is important that you write the numbers down in the same sequence.
On the Left hand dial, read the number that the pointer has just passed and write it down.
Read the last number passed on the second dial and write down.
Read the last number passed on the third dial and write it down.
Read the last number passed on the fourth dial and write it down.
Read the last number passed on the fifth dial and write it down.
Putting all the numbers together you should have this reading.
You Can Read Your Meter Too! Let's try reading the meter again after having used some electricity.
Did you get a reading of 17650 kWh? Reading these meter dials has given you the way to find out how much electricity you used in the time between the readings...and also the basis for how much you will have to pay for the kWh used.

Please Note Some of our customers have digital display meters. In this case, the numbers displayed must also be read from Left to Right.
Deduct the previous reading from the reading on the digital display meter to determine the number of kiloWatt-hours of electricity used.
