As the sole electricity provider in the Cayman Islands, Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) is committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to its customers. One integral group that plays a vital role in achieving this commitment is the Environment, Health & Safety team (EHS) at CUC.

The work of the EHS team is true testament to the fact that, with the right team and unwavering determination, we can create a world where economic progress harmonises seamlessly with environmental preservation. The EHS team at CUC embodies this ethos and their impact resonates far beyond the confines of their roles.

The team is led by Director Joni Kirkconnell, who has many years of experience in environmental protection and occupational health and safety.

About EHS:

The EHS team is responsible for a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to:

+ Developing and implementing environmental, health and safety policies and procedures;

+ Conducting environmental, health and safety audits and inspections;

+ Investigating and reporting on incidents;

+ Training employees on environmental, health and safety topics;

+ Working with government agencies, the public, and other stakeholders to promote environmental protection, health and safety;

+ Maintaining CUC’s environmental, health and safety management systems.

The EHS team is committed to providing CUC with a safe and healthy work environment and to protecting the environment of the Cayman Islands.

 

Joni Kirkconnell, Director

Caymanian Joni Kirkconnell is the Director of the EHS team at CUC and has been with the Company for many years. She is a highly respected leader in the field of environmental protection and occupational health and safety.

Joni is passionate about her work and is dedicated to making CUC a safe and sustainable company. She is also committed to educating the Caymanian community about the importance of environmental protection:

“I am proud to be a part of the EHS team at CUC. We are committed to protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of our employees and customers. We know that our work is important and we are dedicated to making a difference.” Joni stated.

 

Jeanine Burger, Manager

Jeanine Burger is the EHS Manager at CUC. She joined the team from a large utility company in South Africa and brings many years of EHS management and systems experience to the team.

Jeanine is responsible for developing and implementing CUC's environmental and safety policies and procedures. She also oversees the Company’s environmental audits and inspections.

Jeanine is committed to providing CUC with a safe and healthy work environment and to protecting the environment of the Cayman Islands. She is also a strong advocate for continual improvement:

“I am constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental and safety performance. I believe that we can always do better and I am committed to making CUC a leader in the field of environmental protection and safety.” Jeanine stated.

 

Aaron Finch, Supervisor

Aaron Finch is the EHS Supervisor at CUC. He joined the team from another United States based Fortis utility company, Tucson Electric Power in Arizona and brings years of experience in the Safety and Health side of the EHS spectrum to CUC.

Aaron is responsible for supervising the EHS team’s safety and health programmes. He also conducts safety inspections, various safety training sessions, and helps facilitate incident investigations.

Aaron is committed to creating a safe and healthy work environment for all CUC employees. He is also passionate about educating employees about safety hazards and how to avoid them:

“Safety isn’t the absence of accidents, rather it is the presence of the capacity we build into our work practices to survive catastrophic events. My goal as part of the CUC EHS team is to ensure that we are a safety resource. CUC’s greatest resource is its people. Our job as safety professionals is to partner with our work family and help facilitate their efforts in building our capacity to keep us all safe.” Aaron stated.

 

Victoria Powery, EHS Specialist

Victoria Powery (affectionately known as “Vicky”) is an EHS Specialist at CUC. She has been with the EHS team for many years as an administrator, but recently transitioned into the role of EHS Specialist. Victoria is the organisational heartbeat of EHS at CUC.

Vicky is responsible for a wide range of tasks, including coordinating the EHS team's training programmes, managing the company's environmental database and providing administrative support to the EHS team.

Vicky is committed to helping CUC achieve its environmental and safety goals. She is also passionate about educating employees about the importance of environmental protection and safety:

“I am proud to be a part of the EHS team at CUC. We are committed to making a difference in the world by protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of our employees and customers.” Vicky said.

 

Ronald Ebanks, Environmental Specialist

Ronald Ebanks is an Environmental Specialist at CUC. He recently moved home to his native Cayman and assumed the role of Environmental Specialist with EHS. Ronald brings a wealth of technical, chemical and scientific knowledge to the EHS team.

Ronald is responsible for overseeing CUC’s environmental compliance and reporting. He also works with the EHS team to develop and implement environmental programmes and initiatives.

Ronald is committed to protecting the environment of the Cayman Islands. He is also passionate about educating the Caymanian community about the importance of environmental protection:

“I am excited to be a part of the EHS team at CUC. I am committed to working with the team to protect the environment and ensure the safety of our employees and customers. I believe that it is important to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. CUC is committed to doing just that.” said Ronald.
